Blogger Heather Solos' book Home-Ec 101 is the go to bible for the generation of mom's and individuals who didn't have the benefit of a home economics class in high school or who did not bother taking the class. Fortunately I took full advange of my schools home-ec classes and learned how to cook and sew.

Musically Speaking: 'Slice' from Five for Fighting

Singer, songwriter and pianist John Ondrasik, who records as Five for Fighting, is a very earnest artist.

Slice, his fifth studio project, is a record about personal memories that fit as universal themes. The 11 piano-based tracks have a wistful air about them: an honest longing to keep life and humanity in proper perspective.

Ondrasik sings about the lessons of 9/11 on "Tuesday," the innocent leap for love on "Chances," the triumph of heart over muscle on "Augie Nieto" and he pens a refreshingly sincere ode to servicemen in "Note to an Unknown Soldier." Nothing comes off contrived or syrupy, even the paeans to his wife, "This Dance" and "Story of Your Life." His melodies have an old-school tinge, as well as a melancholy hue.

No surprise from the guy who penned the thoughtful hits "Superman (It's Not Easy)" and "100 Years." But he dresses the proceedings with bass, guitars, drums, percussion and strings to avoid monotony.

Perhaps an hour of this California native's repertoire could meander into insufferable territory. But at 41 minutes, Slice is a big-enough piece.

MICHAEL BUBLE IS CRAZY LOVE

He sold more 22 million albums, won a Grammy award and then disappeared for two-and-a-half years. Now Michael Bublé is back with a follow up to his 2007 hit Call Me Irresponsible with Crazy Love.

A mix of original tracks and covers of classics, Bublé describes the album as the “ultimate record about the inevitable roller coaster ride of relationships”.

"I started this record knowing I was going to record it differently than my previous ones," he said.

" I dug way deeper and was more introspective on this one. Basically, I sang the truth - made each song autobiographical - and you can definitely hear the difference.

"I went back to the way my idols made their records. I wanted an organic feel - so people could feel like they were in the studio with me. The musicians and I all sat in the room, recorded it right from the floor and we let the sounds all come together and bleed into one another. It's not contrived. Not too perfect. It just feels really good."

What a great record but one of the features of his previous recordings that I liked was that they were clearly "studio works of art" in that there was much thought given to the total mix and the overall super squeaky clean result. On the new CD, there are some spots that sound like the old mix, but more of it sounds like a live recording.

Wish it was available on vinyl. Loved the great rendition of the standards. A great take on the (Van Morrison)Crazy Love and the (Billy Vera) At this Moment. What a thrill to hear the duet version of Ron Sexsmith)Whatever it Takes. All and all a great collection all around.

BRANDI CARLILE BELTS IT OUT

Brandi Carlile is gifted with a deep, commanding voice that lends gravity to her original songs. This time around, she's offering a few love songs (for people who are into that) but in the grand tradition of singer-songwriters who grew up listening to traditional country music, there are quite a few devastating sad ballads, too.

Ms. Carlile, who hails from the outskirts of Seattle, has the kind of voice most Nashville producers would be happy to work with: roomy, dark-hued and bittersweet, with a firmness of purpose and pitch.

One thing I admire about her music is that she doesn't meander in her lyrics. Instead she essentially takes a stab right at the emotional heart of the song. Then she usually twists the blade. She's also smart enough to make sure that the melodies are memorable, rather than just a long set list of navel-gazing songs about disillusionment. It also helps that she boasts an incredible band beside her and that the cello, guitars, piano and drums all underscore the dramatic swells of her songs.

Joshua Bell: At Home With Friends

The concept of At Home With Friends was inspired by Joshua Bell’s long-time practice of holding "musical soirees" at his New York residence, eclectic gatherings of musicians, actors, comics, literary figures and others who convene for the sheer joy of sharing their art in an informal setting. With this in mind, Bell has spent the past four years designing and building his home in Manhattan to accommodate the ideal "stay-at-home" venue.

On this recording, friends performing with Joshua Bell include Chris Botti, Sting, Carel Kraayenhof, Josh Groban, Edgar Meyer, Frankie Moreno, Nathan Gunn, Regina Spektor, Chris Thile, Anoushka Shankar, Marvin Hamlisch and even Sergei Rachmaninov by way of Zenph Re-performance technology.

The covers that Bell selected for At Home With Friends are as varied as its performers, beginning with a tender rendition of “I Loves You Porgy.” The sweet strings of Bell’s violin blend beautifully with the lonely jazz of Botti’s trumpet on the Porgy and Bess ballad.

Sting lends his voice to the sixteenth century love song “Come Again,” a version of which appeared on Sting’s The Journey & The Labyrinth. I preferred the simpler lute rendition on Sting’s album, but Bell’s arrangement is also very pretty.

Josh Groban’s voice makes a good companion for Bell’s violin in the theme from “Cinema Paradiso.” However, it’s my Cuban boys Tiempo Libre who steal the show with “Para Ti.” The song alternates between peppy brass coupled with rhythmic Latin percussion and soft orchestral interludes.

Bell states. "Some of my most precious memories of childhood recall the ‘family musicales’ in my home; my sisters, my parents, my cousins all playing music together and for each other during the holidays. Since then I went on to have many thrilling experiences in concert halls, but I still enjoy the experience of making music with my friends and family in a small, intimate setting. There’s nothing like sitting on a pillow by the piano surrounded by passionate artists, not quite sure who’s going to get up next to perform. It’s my hope that this recording figuratively transports listeners into the room with us." -Joshua Bell

HARRY CONNICK, JR. YOUR SONGS ALBUM REVIEW

Thanks to decades as a professional musician, it seems Harry Connick Jr. can adapt to any song or crowd. The renowned singer, pianist and actor achieves this on his new covers album, 'Your Songs.

Even though Connick has said the recording took him out of his comfort zone, he performs as if he's been playing these songs all his life.

"Your Songs" consists of Connick singing familiar songs backed by a full jazz big band and string orchestra. Along with writing the orchestrations himself, Connick recruited Branford and Wynton Marsalis to play on the album. Bluegrass guitar virtuoso Bryan Sutton also appears as a guest on the album.

"My usual pattern is I either write the songs or pick the songs," Connick says. "Depending on the configuration I arrange, orchestrate, conduct, sing, and then oversee the mixing and mastering. You might say that I'm very hands on."

This is the first album that Connick has teamed up with record company producer Clive Davis. Clive picked the majority of the songs and then Connick arranged and orchestrated them.

Connick has said he was used to working only with Tracey Freeman, his longtime friend and producer, so he was unsure what to make of it when Davis approached him with the project. Davis talked Connick into the project, saying the album was meant to feature both Connick's singing and arranging over the classics, and 'Your Songs' was born.

The process wasn't always so easy, though. The pair held meetings in Davis' "elaborate" office every week, discussing song choices and arguing about arrangements. Aside from their squabbles Connick was also taken aback by Davis' eloquence, saying the producer would refer to parts of the recording as "picayune" or "strident," descriptions Connick would mistakenly take as compliments. Despite their occasional disagreements, Connick graciously admitted that the record wouldn't have become what it was without Davis' influence.

The album includes classics such as Elvis Presley's "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You," Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa," Tony Bennett's "Who Can I Turn To?," Frank Sinatra's "All The Way," Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" and nine others.

For Diane Birch, inspiration has a way of striking when she least expects it. "I'll be just about to enter the shower, and then I'll freak out and I'll have a song idea. It's like someone has a string attached to me, and I just follow it," says the 26-year-old singer-songwriter, who looks plucked straight from Godard heroine central casting. Birch, whose father was a travelling preacher, spent her early years in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Australia before settling in Portland, Oregon. A trained pianist, she moved to Los Angeles after high school with the hopes of scoring music for films. "The idea of becoming a singer or getting a record deal, those things were never on my radar," Birch says. "I just knew there was something greater out there that would find me -- and it did."

It was only after taking a vocal class ("my friend was like, 'it's great: there's a piano, and you get in touch with your feelings'") that Birch realized she could sing. She soon found herself in London, where she landed a manager and spent a year writing songs. "I have an old soul, for sure," she says. "And I think being in such an old place, with all that history, was really inspiring for me." Indeed, her debut album, Bible Belt, seems almost like an American response to the neo-soul stylings of Amy, Lily, Adele, et al. -- old-timey and soulful with a dose of homegrown, Stevie Nicks-esque twang.

The result? Diane Birch sounds like an old favorite, with all the sparkle and magic of a breakthrough talent. People says she sounds like a combination of early Carole King, Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks, with a little Joss Stone and Cat Power mixed in. Bible Belt is only her first record, but it’s one of the most accomplished albums you’ll hear all year. From the opening track “Fire Escape” to the closing “Magic View,” Diane’s stunning voice is mesmerizing.

Written entirely by Diane, Bible Belt was recorded in New York City and New Orleans with an impressive team of Grammy-winning producers: S-Curve Records founder Steve Greenberg, soul legend Betty Wright and Mike Mangini, in their first project together since producing Joss Stone’s first albums.

WORTH A LISTEN...

I expected The Ballas Hough Band's first album to be like so many other celebrity-turned-singer albums, all fluff and no talent. I have to admit I was wrong! What I knew of them was from their appearances on Dancing With the Stars, so I wasn’t expecting pop music! Their sound is Very boy-band, but in a good way. The Ballas Hough Band credits Michael Jackson, Prince, Queen, and Nirvana as their early inspirations and their influences can be heard throughout.

Their single, “Do It For You” was co-written by the new American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi - it’s a pop song that reminds me of early Justin Timberlake & Britney Spears. “Devastated” is Maroon-5 flavored but throws in a little bit of Daughtry as well. Couldn’t help but think it also would have fit in well in the 70s - a bit of a throwback - to the time of Queen.

Mark Ballas began playing the guitar at the age of 4 and at the age of 12 began to write and perform his own music, playing guitar, drums and bass. With his best friend Derek Hough, he formed the band Almost Amy, now known as Ballas Hough Band. Other members of the band are Emily Grace - flute/sax/piano/vocals, Sam Marder - bass and Harry Sullivan - drums.

With a PhD in zoology from Cambridge University, Loki Osborn went to Africa intent on saving elephants. But after he got there in the mid-1990s, he realized the problem isn't too few elephants, but too many.

So what is a professionally-trained friend of elephants to do?

If you're Osborn, you go back to your roots. He originally hails from Louisiana and is a member of the Mcllhenny family, which makes Tabasco Sauce. "I grew up with chilies," says Osborn, 41. "I'm kind of obsessed by them, actually." Of course, he is also pretty obsessive about elephants. A sex attacker who hid a carrot in his trousers and pretended it was his erect penis has been jailed for 18 months.
Driving instructor Stephen Cooney, 51, groped three female learner drivers in a series of attacks on Teesside dating back to 2002.

A jury at Teesside Crown Court found him guilty of two indecent assaults and two sexual assaults.

Cooney, of Marske-by-the-Sea near Redcar, told the court the carrot incident was a "practical joke".

The court heard how Cooney put the 12-inch carrot down his trousers and told a pupil in her 40s that a perfectly executed manoeuvre was so good that it had given him an erection.

He then took her hand and made her touch the vegetable before showing her the carrot, the court heard.

He denied placing her hand on his groin, but admitted hiding the vegetable in his pocket.

The world's largest elephant is not something you'd easily misplace.

But a Nepali wildlife reserve appears to have done just that.

Raja Gaj, or king elephant, was estimated to be 11 feet 3 inches (nearly 3.5 metres) tall at the shoulder, some two feet taller than the average Asian elephant. The bull was one of the main tourist attractions at Bardia National Park in southwest Nepal.

An official said today he has been missing for a year and may well be dead.

An eight-month-old baby boy in Jilin, Northeast China has tipped the scales at over three stone.

Weighing 18.8 kg (41 pounds) and measuring 78 centimeters in height, he was born with a normal birth weight of 3.3 kg (7 pounds 4 oz).

However, he starting putting on extra weight when he was one month old, according to his parents.

His mother nurses him more than 20 times a day because he often feels hungry. Because of his obesity, he is unable to crawl or stand.

A compound found in cannabis may stop breast cancer spreading throughout the body, US scientists believe.
The California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute team are hopeful that cannabidiol or CBD could be a non-toxic alternative to chemotherapy.
Unlike cannabis, CBD does not have any psychoactive properties so its use would not violate laws, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics reports.
The authors stressed that they were not suggesting patients smoke marijuana.
They added that it would be highly unlikely that effective concentrations of CBD could be reached by smoking cannabis.
